Grammar and punctuation skills require explicit instructions and regular practice to master. These skills are important prerequisites to becoming skilled writers. Evan-Moor has many quality products to help teach Language Skills, including grammar. I have previously enjoyed using Language Fundamentals and Daily Language Review with my children. As my children have also loved the Skill Sharpener Series, I was excited to try out Skill Sharpeners Grammar & Punctuation, pre-K. I received a free copy of this activity book in exchange for this review.

Perfect Introduction to Grammar and Punctuation Concepts

When I first considered using this pre-K grammar & punctuation book, my first thought was, “What does a preschooler really need to know about grammar and punctuation?” After looking through the book, I realized that it gently introduces these grammar and punctuation concepts in a way young children can understand. For example, when introducing nouns, the concept taught is, “Some words name a thing.” Next, examples are provided with drawings and words that my emerging reader could decode.

Each colorful page has fun activities to support the concepts. My 4.5 year old absolutely loves the Skill Sharpener series and this book held up to her expectations. She has loved the color by word, matching, cutting and pasting, and puzzle activities. She is learning language concepts and practicing her emerging reading skills while having fun.

Open-and-Go

As a busy mom, curriculum products that require preparation on my part just do not happen consistently. I love that the Skill Sharpeners Activity books are so easy to use and require no teacher preparation.

Independent Work

Once my daughter went through the first unit, she understood what to do and could complete the pages in her activity book with minimal help. Occasionally, I will need to read directions, explain what to do, or read a word to her. After we discussed the content and new concepts, she could complete the pages independently. As I homeschool multiple children, it is really helpful to have something she can complete by herself while I am working with siblings. She gets her instruction time with Mommy too, but it is just nice to have something educational that she enjoys while she waits her turn.

My 3rd grader likes to get in on the fun too. She made a crown to match the one my preschooler made in the Grammar & Punctuation Activity book.

Limitations

As this Grammar and Punctuation book includes some beginning word matching and reading skills, I would not recommend it for most younger preschoolers (e.g., 3 year olds). I have been using this book with a 4.5 year old who is an emerging reader and it has been a great fit for her current skill levels. Please check additional previews here to determine if this book would be a good fit for your child. If you are looking for activity books for your 3 year old, be sure to check out some of the other Skill Sharpener Pre-K titles, such as Skill Sharpeners Geography Pre-K that was fun for my then 3 year old.
