If you are not familiar with Evan-Moor’s Skill Sharpeners series, they are a set of grade level workbooks covering various content areas including reading, science, math, and more. Last year I tried out the Pre-K Geography book with my 3 year old and she loved it (CLICK HERE to read my review). This year she is now 4 and 1/2 and working her way through level K material. I searched through the Skill Sharpener Series and picked out the Critical Thinking book for her to try. I received a free copy of the level K Skill Sharpeners Critical Thinking book in exchange for this review.
Overview of the Skill Sharpeners Critical Thinking Activity Book
The level K book provides full color learning activities about the following topics:
Each topic has activities that work on critical thinking skills. Math concepts (e.g., counting, matching, patterns) and fine motor skills (e.g., drawing, cutting, and tracing) are also covered.
Benefits of the Critical Thinking Activity Book
This workbook is absolutely beautiful with full color drawings and photographs. The activities are well laid out and fun for my daughter to complete. My daughter loves the look of her workbook and asks to do the activities in it.
Independent Practice Activities
I love that my daughter is able to complete most of the activities with minimal guidance. After I read the information pages to my daughter, I may need to read or tell her the directions for the supporting activities. Next, she is able to jump into the activity and stay occupied while learning and practicing important skills. This is really helpful to me as a mom homeschooling multiple children. It gives me a chance to keep her engaged while I do some one-on-one work with one of her siblings. Our other reading and math activities require full parent involvement, so it is nice to have something that she can do on her own.
Fun Craft Projects
I have been short on time lately, so getting our art projects ready to go just isn’t happening very often. This Critical Thinking workbook has some no-prep arts and crafts activities incorporated into the book. We just pull out the page and assemble the project. My daughter is loving these little projects and is able to do all of the cutting herself. After we assemble the projects, she has a lot of fun playing with the resulting artifacts.
Knowing me, if a product or curriculum requires preparation, it just is not going to happen. This Critical Thinking Workbook requires no prep. We just turn to the next page and are ready to go. You will need some basic supplies like crayons or markers, scissors, and glue. I keep these on hand nearby for use with any of our curriculum. This quality product is definitely easy to use.
I think one of the best parts of the Critical Thinking Activity book is that my daughter is having fun while learning. She is practicing important skills like cutting, counting, etc., and just enjoying doing the activities.
This may just be my kids, but we have some jealously happening with this Critical Thinking book. My 7 year old sees the fun things my younger daughter is doing and wants the same book. She even pulled out her Never-Bored book to show me it didn’t have any cat projects like the Grade K Critical Thinking book (CLICK HERE to read my review of the Never-Bored Book). Her Never-Bored book does have a lot of fun projects she loves to create and play with. So, you may end up having to buy a Critical Thinking workbook for each of your elementary level children. The good news is that the Critical Thinking Activity Book is available for grades pre-K through grade 6.
